Tammy is a high school student. Until recently, she was a girl whose phone was like a part of her body. And she was in the habit of checking it every minute. Smartphones can be used to do almost anything, from taking pictures and chatting with friends to watching whole movies, and Tammy made efficient use of all these functions and more. She could not imagine even a day without her smartphone. However, all this changed a few weeks ago.
Tammy and her friend Fran took a trip to the seaside. They saw an appealing boat tour, so they bought tickets and went aboard the boat. As it moved away from the harbor, Tammy stood up to take a picture, but dropped her phone into the sea. "Oh no!" she screamed. "I can't post today's pictures on my Instagram," she said to Fran. "And I've lost touch with everyone. What am I going to do?" Tammy was sure her day was ruined. She felt like crying, and she regretted getting on the boat.
As the boat sailed to a nearby island, Tammy had nothing to do without her phone, and she couldn't stop thinking about the disaster. Surprisingly, as soon as she felt the sea breeze on her face, she became a lot calmer and more relaxed. The sea gave off a fresh and pleasant smell. She even saw dolphins swimming next to the boat. Tammy couldn't take any pictures of them, but she knew she would never forget the sight.
As they ate lunch on the island later, Tammy was in a cheerful mood. For once, she didn't need to "feed" her camera before she fed herself. She chatted with Fran more than usual and really enjoyed their time together. By the end of the trip, the loss of the phone no longer bothered her.
Tammy came to know that there was more to life than taking photos and going on social media. Later, when she got a new phone, she was determined to be more sensible with it. Now she spends less time on her phone and pays more attention to her surroundings and other opportunities in life. Technology is supposed to make people's lives easier, not busier. It was the loss of her phone that taught Tammy this important lesson.
