Lee is going to college this September. He lives too far away to stay at home while he studies. His options are to share a room in the college dormitory or rent a room or apartment off campus. He has decided to go on an Internet forum to ask other students about their opinions and experiences.
NewBoyLee:
Hi. I'm starting college in the fall. I look forward to it but I'm not sure whether to live in the dorm or rent a room off campus. Which is preferable? What do you guys think? I'd appreciate any helpful advice.
Engineer2001:
I lived in the college dorm throughout my freshman year. The main reason was my budget. I had figured I'd be paying twice as much to rent a room in a private apartment, not to mention the extra bills and travel expenses. And I never regretted living in the dorm. My roommates were all great guys, studying in different departments. We had tons of fun together. In fact, some of us are sharing an apartment this year. The only catch with the dormitory was that it was too noisy to study there. But hey, the library was a three-minute walk away!
SallytheSinger:
My experience of the college dorm was completely the opposite to Engineer's. I had expected to be happy there, but in fact I disliked it from the start. I didn't get along with the other three girls in the room, and I often suspected they were gossiping about me. The lack of privacy was troublesome as well. Sure, it was cheap, but I'd rather shell out more for a room of my own in a shared apartment than live like that again. This year, my room is spacious and comfortable. And there are other advantages as well. My housemates and I can have friends over for parties. I need to take a bus to the campus, but I don't mind.
Skaterman:
Congratulations on getting into college, Lee. There are upsides and drawbacks to living in a college dorm. From the comments above, you can see that it is essential to share a room with people you like and respect. Regarding the other factors, such as cost, travel, convenience, and curfews, you'll have to weigh them up and consider what's most important to you. Anyway, whatever you choose to do, good luck in your freshman year!
NewBoyLee:
Thanks, guys. You've given me plenty to think about.
NewBoyLee:
SallytheSinger:
Skaterman:
NewBoyLee:
